Jean François Rousselot

FUNNY ART, the Offbeat Art in Colours

Born in Toulouse in 1971, Jean-François Rousselot developed a burning passion for drawing at a very young age, an art that has never truly left him. Although he didn’t have the opportunity to pursue formal art studies, he honed his technique independently, immersing himself in pencil drawing from 1997 onwards.

Initially, still lifes came to life under his fingers, but his incisive eye and innate sense of offbeat humour quickly led him to breathe new life into his creations. It was then that he began to incorporate animals and other living elements into his compositions, transforming his canvases into unique and characterful scenes.

His artistic exploration then expanded to include colour, experimenting with pastels, documentary watercolour, and acrylics, before rediscovering a purity of expression in oil painting. Following participation in exhibitions, he was invited in 1999 to a successful solo show, confirming his talent. Life then led him down a rich and varied professional path—from graphic design to photography, including a stint in the building trades—taking him away from his brushes and pencils for a time, marking a true interruption in his artistic practice.

However, the call of art proved too strong. For the past few years, Jean-François Rousselot has dedicated himself fully to his true passion, resuming his dreams of becoming a painter. Today, he creates hyperrealistic works, vibrant with colour, life, and humour, which he calls FUNNY ART. Drawing inspiration from nature to paint everyday objects with remarkable precision and detail, he intertwines humans, plants, and animals to create scenes where surrealism is never far away. Plays of light and shadow, combined with this playful and quirky touch, create a welcoming atmosphere that invites escape and joy, whatever the themes explored.

In this unique imaginary universe, each canvas is an invitation to reflect on the vanity of the contemporary world, while offering the viewer the possibility of drawing from it a memory, an emotion, a personal meaning.

Listed in the AKOUN and DROUOT art price guides, Jean-François Rousselot is represented in several galleries, sharing his unique perspective on the world with contagious generosity and vitality. He is currently working to expand his presence on the international art scene, aiming to promote FUNNY ART beyond borders.

The Funny Art

Hyperrealism in the service of smile.

Welcome to the world of Funny Art, the artistic movement I created. My work is a vibrant celebration of life and joy, whose primary mission is to bring smiles and good cheer. Each canvas is designed to be an experience, inviting the viewer to question, because the true pleasure lies in discovering a detail that doesn’t seem to belong at first glance.

Style, technique and humour

My approach is based on a highly realistic technique, bordering on hyperrealism through meticulous attention to detail. Yet, this realism is consistently subverted by the integration of a touch of absurdity and surrealism. I use a palette of bright and vibrant colours, because colour is the direct expression of the joy and energy I wish to convey.

Favourite themes

My favourite subjects revolve around the animal world, revisited still lifes, or certain figures who have marked a contemporary era, such as the series on La Linea. The aim is to stage these subjects in a humorous and unconventional way to create a question and, ultimately, a smile.

BESSIERES MEDIA LIBRARY (31)

Solo exhibition ‘Bird Faces’

Series created using pencils (dry to oil) from 8H to 8B (20/30cm drawing format).
The aim of this series was to catalogue birds with rather unusual heads, based on several years of research (from 2013 to 2017).
Beyond their beauty, I wanted to highlight all the visual flaws of these species, their peculiarities, their expressions.
This was a return to my roots for me, using pencils (from dry to greasy), which I had abandoned 20 years earlier with my first work, the BLUE MACAW, drawn in 1997.
